The Dutch Mental Healthcare System

The Netherlands operates a regulated insurance-based mental healthcare system. All residents are insured under the Health Insurance Act (Zvw), which funds specialist mental healthcare, while municipalities provide social and community support through the Social Support Act (Wmo) and Long-Term Care Act (Wlz). Oversight is shared between the Ministry of Health (VWS), Zorginstituut Nederland (ZIN), and the Dutch Healthcare Authority (NZa). The system is designed to ensure universal access and quality, though challenges remain in waiting times, workforce capacity, and cross-sector coordination.
